Traditional Offset Printing
From the earliest use of wooden blocks in 3rd Century China, to the digital printing presses of today, printing technology has undergone significant changes. But despite the many advancements, the intent of printing remains the same – to create a final product that conveys information via a printed medium.
Traditional offset printing dates back to 1903, when Ira Washington Rubel serendipitously discovered the offset printing process and then invented the first offset printing press.
The offset printing process involves burning a desired image onto a plate and then transferring (or offsetting) it from the plate onto a rubber ‘blanket’, and then onto the printing surface itself. While this process is initially more labor intensive than digital printing, it becomes very cost effective when used for large-volume projects.
Despite technological advancements (and the fact that offset printing is over a century old), it is still a widely used commercial printing application for several reasons, the first of which is quality. Offset printing produces clean, sharp images, consistent color, and is scalable for a variety of quantities and substrates
Lastly, when it comes to large commercial printing projects, offset printing reigns supreme. The majority of the cost is front loaded into the initial setup, so once the project is in place, economies of scale kick in to make large projects far more cost effective than they would be for digital printing.
