FSC Certified

In 2007, Whitmore Printing received Chain of Custody Certification from the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC.) This certification is a benchmark in environmental and social responsibility, and not handed out without merit.

The FSC Certification program is an international certification and labeling system that guarantees that the forest products we purchase come from responsibly managed forests and verified recycled sources. The Chain of Custody Certification tracks the resources and materials from harvest, to manufacturing, to distribution and finally to retail locations.

One crucial element keenly relevant to us as a commercial printing company is our utilization of FSC-certified papers. These papers contain FSC-certified wood fiber from well-managed forests or postconsumer recycled content (or a combination of both), along with other controlled forest-friendly sources. Using FSC papers protects the wildlife and watersheds found within these well-managed forests by assuring those areas are not subject to illegal logging or planted with genetically modified trees, nor converted into environmentally detrimental plantations.

Another benefit of FSC certification is that the percentage of recycled content claimed by the manufacturer is verified as accurate, ensuring that the paper in question is indeed recycled at the listed percentage. Along with this adherence to stringent oversight, FSC is the only forest certification standard supported by such environmental organizations as the World Wildlife Fund of Canada, the Sierra Club of Canada and Greenpeace.

While the FSC initiative is voluntary, it is increasingly a market-driven mechanism, as consumers begin demanding products that are produced in an environmentally and socially responsible manner.
